19th Century Arts and Crafts

Friday, May 30, 2008   6:30-8:30 pm   free

Join us on the beautiful lawn of the Burwell School Historic Site for the Hillsborough Arts Council’s May Last Friday event. Learn about 19th century arts and crafts such as 1860 Period Cosmetics, mid 19th century quilt patterns, knitting, whitework embroidery, parlor games, and writing. There will be many opportunities to make crafts in a traditional way. This is a great way to learn about history while you are having fun and it is great for kids. The event is FREE!

Democratic Women of Wake County will meet Thursday, May 29, 2008 at the NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street. The buffet lunch lines open at 11:30 am with the program starting at 12:00 Noon. The cost of the luncheon is $13.00.


The program will feature the Wake County General Assembly Democratic candidates for the November election.

The Special Forces Association (SFA), Chapter 100,  is hosting its 3rd Annual Benefit Festival. Our event includes talent from Brian Howe former lead singer of Bad Company,and 6 local North Carolina bands a ride in motorcycle and bicycle show, a 2008 Chevy Colorado Pick Up truck raffle. On location that day are the Gieco #7 Nascar racing car and the Cape Fear Harley Davidson drag motorcycle. NCs famous Captain Jim the Magician performing 2 live shows as well as roaming the crowd, food and merchandise venders, jugglers as well as other family entertainment, to benefit the Special Forces Association Scholarship, Tribute, and Benevolent Funds.

The SFA Scholarship Fund maintains funds that are awarded through an essay selection each year to surviving children of Killed in Action Special Forces soldiers to finance their ongoing education.

The SFA Tribute Fund provides immediate, one-time cash donations to widows of fallen Special Forces Soldiers Killed In Action (KIA), to benefit the surviving family.

The SFA Benevolent Fund provides case-by-case financial grants to wounded Special Forces Soldiers to help them during their rehabilitation, prepare handicap home modifications, and assist with unforeseen emergency expenses.

The Festival is scheduled for, Saturday, the 31st of May, 2008 from 11:00 am to 11:00pm, at Festival Park, Downtown Fayetteville.

The Relay for Life of Durham County is a community event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The event Celebrates those who have survived a battle with cancer, Remembers loved ones lost to it, and is a way to Fight Back against it by raising funds and awareness.
The theme chosen is, "Imagine A World Without Cancer". Teams will camp out and take turns circling the track at: 

Durham County Stadium
750 Stadium Drive 
Durham, NC will begin 5/30/08 at 6pm. and run through 5/31/08 
until 11am.

There will be fund raising events by all the teams,live music, ethnic food for sale and childrens events.

Learning Japanese Through Song
Five Friends From Japan Saturday Series

Want to learn how to sing like a frog, dance like a cat, or do the Hokey-Pokey in Japanese? Japanese-American singer/songwriter Lisa Furukawa will lead you through familiar American songs, Japanese folk songs, and some simple conversations in Japanese.

Five Friends From Japan, presented by Marbles Kids Museum, is supported in Raleigh by United Arts Council, which in turn is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council with funding from the state of North Carolina and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

Presented by the Iron Dukes, the Duke Athletics Tour will make its next stop of this years tour in Wilson on May 20th at the Wedgewood Golf Course in Wilson, NC starting at 6 PM. Blue Devil alumni and fans are invited to meet Head Football Coach David Cutcliffe at this event, and official Duke Gear and golf packages to the Washington Duke Inn will be given away. The Historic Hillsborough Commission will hold its 8th Annual Spring Benefit Party at the Burwell School Historic Site on Friday, May 9th from 6 to 9 p.m.  All proceeds benefit the preservation and programming of the Burwell School Historic Site.  In addition to the silent auction, this year’s party will feature a live auction as well.  Guests can also enjoy delicious food and live music in the Burwell School’s beautiful, historic setting.

During the entire month of May, Rush Hour Karting, located in the White Oak Business Park at 5335 Raynor Road in Garner will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from its new Charity Race League to The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Local branches are located at 3808 Tarheel Drive in Raleigh and 708 Gilbert Street in Durham.

Race dates benefiting the Food Bank:
Tuesdays, May 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th

Time: 7pm to 9pm.

More than 400,000 are at risk of hunger in the Food Banks 34-county service area.
More than 120,000 are children
This summer, children who are on the free and reduced meal program will be out of school and will not have access to these meals.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Individuals age 16 or older can register to race at Rush Hour Karting
Cost is $30
Race every Tuesday from 7pm until 9pm
Race includes a Practice Session, Qualifier, and a Race Finale

STRETCH YOUR DOLLAR
For every dollar donated, the Food Bank is able to provide on average, eight dollars worth of food or four meals.
